When you stop taking PrEP, you will no longer be protected against HIV. It’s important to keep taking PrEP for a short while after the last time you had condom-less sex to have protection from that sexual encounter. This varies depending on your body parts and the kind of sex you’re having.
If you’re having anal sex, you should take PrEP for a minimum of two more days after the last time you had sex. If you have a vagina and are having vaginal sex, you should take PrEP for a minimum of seven more days and, ideally, 28 more days after the last time you had sex. This is because the science is still unclear on continued protection for vaginal sex.
